Governor Tim Pawlenty signed the bill earlier this week that provides $420,000 to plan a health and science building on LSC's main campus on Trinity Road in Duluth and another $525,000 for various repair and betterment projects. "We're very excited to be moving ahead with the new facility for health and science," Dr. Kathleen Nelson, LSC's president explains. "The Governor and the legislature have shown strong support for the state's higher education institutions by providing for the space needs of LSC and other colleges and universities in the state." According to college officials, the planned facility will focus on the training needs of the region's healthcare industry, addressing the projected shortages of nurses and other allied heath professionals. The project will also add much-needed science laboratories. "Our college has more than doubled in size in the past decade and our science labs are among the most heavily used spaces on campus," said Nelson. "This is an important step in providing expanded opportunities in biology, chemistry, physics, geology and environmental science." LSC will also receive funds for campus repair and betterment projects. Funded projects include roof replacement for the art building, an upgrade to heating and ventilation systems, repairs to exterior walls, and expansion of loading dock and storage facilities. Lake Superior College is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. With more than 5,000 students enrolled this spring semester, LSC is Northeastern Minnesota's largest two-year college. LSC provides a wide range of programs and services, including liberal arts and science courses for transfer, technical programs intended to provide occupational skills, continuing education, and customized training for business and industry. |
