Q1. What is an Internet browser?

A. A browser is an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web. The word "browser" seems to have originated prior to the Web as a generic term for user interfaces that let you browse (navigate through and read) text files online. The first widely-used Internet browser was Netscape Navigator. Microsoft followed with its Microsoft Internet Explorer. Today, these two browsers are the only two browsers that the vast majority of Internet users are aware of. Although the online services, such as America Online, originally had their own browsers, virtually all now offer the Netscape or Microsoft browser. Other well-regarded browsers are Mozilla and Opera.

Q2. Which browsers work well with LSC Online?

A. Any of the following browsers should work well with LSC Online:

  • Internet Explorer version 6.0 with latest Service Packs installed, or
  • Netscape Navigator v7.2 and above, or
  • Mozilla Firefox versions 1.3 to 1.7

Browser compatibility changes every time a new browser version is released and also each time a new version of LSC Online is put into service by the school. It is a good idea to check back here periodically.

Q3. Where can I get a free copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer?

Q4. Where can I get a free copy of Netscape Communicator?

A. Click on the Netscape logo to go to the download site for  Netscape Communicator. Netscape 4.0 Logo Netscape Download

Q5. How do I know what browser I am currently using?

A. With your browser running, select the "Help" item from the main menu at the top of the screen.  At the bottom of the drop-down menu you should see a choice that says "About Internet Explorer" or something similar to that. After selecting that menu item, you will see a dialog box that will contain the version number for the browser that you are currently running.

Q6. Can I have more than one Internet browser on my computer?

A. No problem. You can have all three of the recommended browsers if you so desire.  You can also have multiple versions of Netscape on your computer at the same time.  However, the programming for the Microsoft free software download does not allow you to have multiple versions of Internet Explorer on your computer at the same time.  One more note about Microsoft Internet Explorer; you will not be able to download an older version of the browser if you still have a newer version of the browser installed on your computer.

Q7. Can I use the browser that is built into AOL?

A. For most users, AOL does not interface very well with the LSC Online courseware. It is recommended that you:

  •  (1) connect to the Internet through AOL,

  • (2) open an empty "live chat" to keep AOL running in the background,

  • (3) minimize AOL, without closing it, and

  • (4) open one of the Internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape to access your LSC Online account.
