How to Access the LSC Wireless Network

To connect to an access point, you would need to have a computer running windows XP, Mac OS X, or a Linux distribution that you have configured to use a wireless network adaptor. The computer needs be equipped with a wireless network card. Computer services will provide support for the Windows platform.

The instructions for using Microsoft Windows XP are as follows:

  1. Start the computer
  2. Make sure your wireless antennae is enabled (some laptops allow turning antennae off).
  3. If you are using a wireless adapter card, make sure you have it inserted into the slot.
  4.  Login to your computer.
  5.  Click start->control panel->network connections->right click on Wireless Network Connection-> Select "View Available Wireless Networks" from the popup menu.
  6.  You will see a wireless network with the name: "lscpublic".
  7.  Click on lscpublic, click the box that says "allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure", and then click on "connect." Startup your browser. You will be able to access the internet.

    Some points to remember:
The connection that we have just described is for public access. You can not access our internal LAN using this connection, (this includes printing, ISRS, Novell login.) It is not encrypted and not secure. Users who want to use the wireless LAN to access the internal file servers, their Novell account, printers, etc., will need to have a custom configuration installed. This will require assistance from computer services staff for most users.
