What is the Associate in Arts Degree? The Associate in Arts degree (AA) provides the first two years of college courses that a student might complete at a four-year college or university. The AA degree program includes the entire Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (40 credits), which will fulfill the low-division general education requirements at any of Minnesota's four year colleges and universities. An additional twenty credits (six or seven courses) are required and may be taken in a number of departments to explore personal interests, develop new skills, and discover something new about the world and yourself. As you work on your Associate in Arts degree you will develop the skills needed to excel in life and in your career. Increasingly, employers are seeking individuals with strong basic skills and exposure to a variety of liberal arts and science fields. Communication, critical thinking, math, and computing skills will be valuable regardless of your future plans.
Students who complete the transfer curriculum are certified in these ten areas of competency by the faculty
A growing number of transfer agreements have been signed with regional colleges and universities. Partner institutions include the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Bemidji State University, the College of St. Scholastica, and others.
Career Outlook and Job Opportunities Workers with an associate degree (two-year degree) averaged $128 a week more than those with a high school education in 2001, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "People with associate degrees also are more likely to find jobs: the unemployment rate in 2001 was more than 30 percent lower for associate degree holders compared with high school graduates. And, according to several academis studies, advantages in the job market might be even greater for those just starting their careers and for those who work in a career related to their degree." Occupational Outlook Quarterly Online, Winter 2002-03 Vol. 46, Number 4. |
