What are the Library's hours? 

Spring Semester Hours:

Monday – Thursday                 7 am – 9 pm
Friday                                     7 am – 4 pm
Saturday                                 9 am – 3 pm
Sunday                                   CLOSED

Exceptions to these hours occur during holiday weekends, breaks and between semesters. 

Where is the Library located within Lake Superior College?

The Harold P. Erickson Library is located near LSC's central entrance.  Find us on a map of the College.

Where do I find the Library's online catalog?

Click here to use the Library's catalog.  If you need help searching the catalog, you may come into the Library and speak with a Librarian or use Ask a Librarian from any computer with Internet access.

What is a database?

 A database is a searchable collection of journals and magazines.  Some databases have only journal citation or abstract information available, while others have many full-text journal articles that can be printed from a computer.

What databases does the Library have?

The Library subscribes to over twenty databases, and there are also free databases and resources online.  Click here to see a list of our databases.

Does the Library have any study rooms?

Yes, we have 4 study rooms available for individuals or groups.  Study rooms may be checked out at the Circulation Desk for 2 hours and may be renewed.  There is a fine of 50 cents per checkout period for late return of the room.

What is the Library's policy on food and drink?

No food is allowed in the Library.  Drinks are allowed only as long as they are in a container with a lid or cap (something that can be closed up while you're not drinking).

What is the Library's policy on cell phones?

All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when you enter the Library.  If your cell phone rings, you will be asked to leave.

How do I check out books, study rooms, etc.?

Bring your LSC student ID with your library barcode on the back or your LSC library card (community members and online students) to the Circulation Desk to check out materials.

 What if I don't have a library barcode? 

If you don't have a library barcode, you can bring your LSC student ID to the Circulation Desk, and we will put a barcode on the back.  If you don't have an LSC student ID, you can obtain one from the Student Life office.  (View a map of the College.)

If you are an online or distance student, you can request a library barcode online.  Your library barcode number will be sent to you through your LSC student e-mail account, and a library card and information will be sent to you through the U.S. mail.

How many books can I check out at a time and for how long?

Students may check out up to 5 items at a time for 4 weeks with 2 renewals.  The limit for audiobooks is 2 at a time.

How do I find out what books I have checked out and when they're due?

You can access your library account online through the Library's catalog.  You can also ask at the Circulation Desk.

Where do I find materials my instructors have put on reserve at the Library?

All reserve materials are located behind the Circulation Desk.  There is a binder at the desk listing all reserves by instructor name.  Most reserves are checked out for 2 hours.  You will need your library barcode to check out reserves.

Can I print materials in the library?

You will need a Debitek print card to print or make photocopies in the Library.  Go to the Student Technology Center to receive your initial card with $4.00 credit.  You may bring this card back to the STC once each semester to have $5.00 added to its value.  There is also a Debitek machine near the East Entrance Information Desk where you can add money to your card.  Printing in black-and-white is 5 cents per page.  Printing in color (only available in the STC) is 50 cents per page.

How do I find books and other materials?

Search the Library's online catalog to locate books, audiobooks, and other materials.  Books are organized by LC (Library of Congress Classification) call numbers.  If you need help finding a book, ask at the Reference or Circulation Desks.

Where do I find resources the Library doesn't own?

First search the Library's catalog to determine whether we own the item.  If the item is checked out, you may place a hold on it to have it set aside for you when it's returned.  If the Library doesn't own the item, use Interlibrary Loan to request that the item be sent to our library.  When it arrives, you'll be notified by e-mail.

Where do I start my research papers?

Research Quickstart located on the library homepage is a great place to begin your research. Search by your subject to access a variety of resources for your research.

Where can I get help?

You can come into the Library during open hours, you can call and speak to a librarian, or you can use Ask a Librarian for online help.

I'm not a student at LSC.  Can I get a library card?

Anyone who is not an LSC student or employee, or students who are not currently registered for classes, may get a Community Library Card.  Community cards have privileges similar to student cards with the following exceptions:

    • No checkout of Art Collection books
    • No checkout of Oversize books
    • No access to Library databases from off-campus
    • No use of Interlibrary Loan.  Community members must use their local public library for Interlibrary Loan.

Community members must apply for a library card in person at the Circulation Desk.  The card is valid for one year from date of issuance.

How do I request a Library barcode online?

Click on the Request a Library Barcode link and fill out the online form.  *Note: only currently enrolled online students may use the online form.  All others must apply in person at the Library Circulation Desk. *You will receive your new barcode number via your LSC student e-mail account within two business days.  Your library card and information about the Library will be sent by U.S. mail to the address you indicated on the online form.

 I don't have my library barcode number, and I need to use the online databases from home.  What do I do?

You may call the Circulation Desk at (218) 733-5912 during open hours, or students may use the Request a Library Barcode link.  Once you have filled out the form and submitted it, you should receive your current library barcode via your LSC student e-mail account within one business day.

Does the Library have any books for leisure reading?

Yes!  We have many works of fiction in the Library.  Our Popular Fiction Collection contains a variety of genres and authors.  Many novels are classified as literature and are shelved in the Main Collection by LC call number.  Search our online catalog to find works by a particular author or title, or come in and browse Popular Fiction. 

What is the Minnesota Collection, and where is it located?

The Minnesota Collection is just one of the Library's collections of books.  It's located in the Minnesota Room at the back of the Library.  Books in this collection must meet one or more of the following criteria:

    • The author is from Minnesota, spent time there, lives there now, or was influenced by the state in some way.
    • The book's topic is some aspect of Minnesota.
    • If a work of fiction, the book is set in Minnesota.

Minnesota Collection books may be checked out for the same period as Main Collection books.

Does the Library have any art books?  Can they be checked out?

Yes, we have a large collection of art books in its own area across from the Minnesota Room.  These include books on artists, art techniques, history of art, and architecture.  Only students and LSC employees may check out art books.

Does the Library have any audiobooks (books-on-CD or books-on-tape)?  How many may be checked out at a time?

Yes, we have a large collection of audiobooks located near the Circulation Desk.  Almost all of our audiobooks are books-on-CD.  Students and LSC employees may check out 2 audiobooks at a time; community members may check out 1 audiobook at a time.

Where is the copier in the Library?  How much does it cost to make copies?

The copier is located near the front of the Library.  To make photocopies, you will need a Debitek print card; each copy is 5 cents.

Is there a lost and found in the Library?

Yes, the lost and found is located at the Circulation Desk.  There is also a lost and found at the Information Desk near the College's east entrance.

What is the Minnesota Room, and where is it located?

The Minnesota Room is located at the back of the Library.  It houses the Minnesota Collection and also has many study tables and a reading area.  Various events are held in the Minnesota Room throughout the school year.  Check our webpage for current events.

What services does the Library provide for faculty?

We offer several services for faculty.  Library instruction sessions, both for live classes and online, are popular.  Faculty may also put items on reserve and request that books and other materials be ordered to support their programs.

What is Research Quickstart, and how do I use it?

Research Quickstart is a resource developed by the University of Minnesota to assist students with research. Students can search under their subjects for research materials and calculate assignments timelines with the Assignment Calculator. 

Where do I search for books?

Go to the online catalog to search for books, videos, and audiobooks.  If you don't find what you need, request the item through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

Where do I search for magazine and journal articles?

 What is the Online Reference Collection?

 It's a collection of online resources you can use for your research paper or project.  It is divided into several categories, such as dictionaries and encyclopedias, almanacs, maps and geography, and writing and quotations.  Click here to see a list of these resources.

 What is Ask a Librarian?

 Ask a Librarian is an excellent way to get answers to your questions about starting your research, sources to use, citation help, Interlibrary Loan, and anything else you need to know about our Library services when you can't visit in person.  A librarian will answer your questions promptly through the e-mail address you provide.

How do I access the Library's databases when I'm not at LSC?

In order to search our databases when you're off-campus, you will need your library barcode number and your password (the first eight letters of your last name).  Most databases require you to login, but the free Internet reference sites in the Online Reference Collection and PubMed do not.  If you experience problems logging in, call the Circulation Desk (218-733-5912) during open hours.

I'm not an LSC student; can I access the databases from home?

Only LSC students and employees with a valid library barcode number may access the Library databases from off-campus.

 I need help with my paper citations.  Where do I go?

The Library has several copies of The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for use in the Library and available for checkout.  There are also excellent online citation resources for when you can't get to the Library.  If you find you still need assistance after consulting these sources, stop into the Library (hours) or use Ask a Librarian.

What is Interlibrary Loan, and how do I use it?

Interlibrary Loan, or ILL, is a way of obtaining materials that the LSC Library doesn't own.  Only students and LSC employees may use this service.  To request an item, fill out our online form.   If you are having problems with the form, use Ask a Librarian or come in for help.  Materials usually take 5-7 days to arrive at the Library; please plan accordingly.

I'd like to search the Internet for sources for my paper.  Where do I start?

With so many web pages out there, it's hard to know which sites are the best to search, and which ones are reliable resources for your paper.  Start here to learn more about how to evaluate web pages and cite the information you find there.  There is also information on search engines, academic research, government resources, and the invisible web (information stored in databases not searchable by search engines).  If you need additional help, Ask a Librarian.

What is the Student Technology Center, and where is it located?

The Student Technology Center is a computer lab located at S2960.  There are over 60 computers for student and community member use. You can get help with printing, software use, and general computer assistance in the Student Technology Center.

What do I need in order to print from the Library computers?

 All Library computers as well as the photocopier use the Debitek print card system for printing.  Go to the Student Technology Center to receive your initial card with $4.00 credit.  You may bring this card back to the STC once each semester to have $5.00 added to its value.  There is also a machine near the East Entrance Information Desk where you can add money to your card.  Printing in black-and-white is 5 cents per page.

Can I print in color?

Yes, color printing is available in the Student Technology Center for 50 cents per page.  There is also a color poster-sized printer at $2.00 per page. 

Can I get help with printing problems?

Yes.  The Student Technology Center can help with all computer and printing questions.

Scanning

Is there a scanner available in the Library?

No, but a scanner is available at the Student Technology Center, located in S2960.

How do I get a library barcode?

Students must bring their LSC picture ID to the Circulation Desk, where a barcode will be put on the back.  Community members can apply for a library card at the Circulation Desk. 

Why do I need a library barcode?

A student library barcode allows you to check out books and study rooms, use Interlibrary Loan, and access the Library's databases from off-campus.  Community membership has somewhat different policies.

What should I do if I receive an overdue notice? 

All overdue notices are sent through e-mail.  If you would like to keep the book, you may renew it online or at the Circulation Desk; otherwise, you may return it to the Library.  There is an after-hours drop box outside the Library doors.

What is the fine for an overdue item?

When an item is past due, a courtesy overdue notice is emailed to the patron. When an item is past due for 14 days, a bill for the replacement cost of the book and a $2.00 nonrefundable processing fee is mailed. Replacement costs are removed when the item is returned; however, the patron is responsible for the processing fee. Fines can be paid at the Student Payment Office. A hold is placed on a student's account until all library debts have been cleared. 

Patrons who have lost or damaged library materials will be asked to pay the replacement cost and a service charge. Damaged items on materials are subject to a fee assessment.
