The library staff is here to help you obtain information. Be sure to ask for assistance when it is needed.
ASK AT THE CIRCULATION DESK for: Help locating materials in the library, guidance in using MnPals, InfoTrac, EBSCO, NetLibrary, and other library databases; requesting materials placed on reserve by faculty, checking out video, audio, and computer software, reserving group study rooms, and to checkout headphones and other AV equipment. Interlibrary loan questions can be answered at the Circulation Desk.
ASK AT THE REFERENCE DESK for: Research assistance. Guidance in using databases such as EBSCO Academic Search Premier and PubMed, internet resources, and reference books.
LIBRARY BARCODES: A current Lake Superior College Student I.D. Card with a valid library barcode is required to borrow materials from the library. A student I.D. card can be obtained from Student Life. A barcode which authorizes library use can be obtained at the Circulation Desk in the Library. The barcode is valid for as long as a student is currently enrolled at Lake Superior College.
PRINTING CHARGES: When printing, students will be asked to present a print card. A print card is given to each enrolled student (upon request at the circulation desk) each semester with $4.00 on the card, if you bring back the print card next semester $5.00 will be added to value.
CIRCULATION INFORMATION: Students may borrow a maximum of 5 items for a four week loan, and if these items are not placed on hold, then they may be renewed twice. Items may be renewed online at MnPals by choosing Your Borrowing Record. Online requests require a barcode entry and password. Ask at the Circulation Desk if you do not know your password.
OVERDUES & FINES: When an item is past due, a courtesy overdue notice is emailed to the patron. When an item is past due for 14 days, a bill for the replacement cost of the book and a $5.00 nonrefundable processing fee is mailed. Replacement costs are removed when the item is returned; however, the patron is responsible for the processing fee. Fines can be paid at the student payment office. A hold is placed on a student's account until all library debts have been cleared.
LOST MATERIALS: Patrons who have lost or damaged beyond use any material they have borrowed, will be asked to pay the replacement cost and a service charge. Damaged items on materials are subject to a fee assessment.
CARD CATALOG & CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM: The on-line catalog, MnPals, is the chief means of discovering and locating material in the Library. Ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk as needed. The library collection is cataloged using the Library of Congress classification system. To find an item, a student needs to obtain the call number from the MnPals on-line catalog. Be sure to check all areas of the collection as follows: main, reference, periodicals, and at the circulation desk for media and reserve items.
PHOTOCOPY MACHINE: A photocopy machine is located in the library for copying materials. The cost is 5¢ per page using your print card.
SECURITY SYSTEM: Library materials have been sensitized. An alarm will sound unless materials are checked out and desensitized before they are taken from the library.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL): The Harold P. Erickson Library is a member of the MINITEX Library Information Network, a publicly supported network of over 200 academic, public, state agency, and libraries that provides free use of library materials to its members. If our library does not have what you need, you have access to all libraries which are part of the MINITEX system.
