How to Apply for Summer Term Financial Aid

(Lots to read and absorb, but it is extremely important that you do both!)

1.The enrollment status for Summer Term Financial Aid is as follows:

          Total Credits                          Financial Aid Status

          12 or more                             Full Time
            9, 10, 11                              Three-quarter Time
            6,   7,   8                              Half Time
Less than 6                             Less than Half Time

Note, however, that summer term courses involve learning a full semester's worth of information in a short period of time. It is therefore advised that students not register for more than 6-8 credits without consulting a professional advisor.

2. There are three separate summer sessions held during the 2008 Summer term:

Standard 8-week Summer Session
    May 28, 2008 - July 22, 2008
First 4-week Mini-Session:
May 28, 2008 -  June 24, 2008
Second 4-week Summer Session
    June 25, 2008-  July 22, 2008

3. As Summer Term is the last term of this current academic year, eligibility is based on the completion of the 2007-2008 FAFSA. The Department of Education deadline for receiving a completed 2007-2008 FAFSA is June 30, 2008.

4. Lake Superior College must have received a non-rejected Student Aid Report from the Department of Education by the last day of your Summer term enrollment for you to benefit from any financial aid funding. If your funding includes a Stafford student loan, the loan must have been certified by financial aid staff prior to the last date of your Summer term enrollment.

5. Federal grant funding is based on your total number of registered credits as of the end of the standard 8-week summer session drop-add period regardless of what session(s) you have enrolled in. The drop-add period for the standard 8-week summer session ends at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

Loans and State grant funding can include late-add courses. Notify the financial aid office if you register for a course after June 3, 2008 and we will determine if the additional credits change your eligibility for state grant or loan funding.

6. If you are enrolled in a course that begins after June 3, 2008 and you decide to drop that course after your financial aid has been disbursed, your financial aid will be adjusted based on your remaining registered credits. If at that time you are registered for less than 6 credits, any loans you have borrowed will be cancelled.

7. Students cannot receive financial aid for repeated courses. This policy does not include courses from which you have withdrawn. You must be registered for a minimum of six non-repeated credits if you plan to borrow a student loan.

8. There are annual Pell Grant limits! If you are eligible for a 2007-2008 Pell Grant and you either did not attend both fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters or attended less than full time either of those semesters, you can use some or all of your remaining 2007-2008 Pell amount for Summer term depending on the number of credits for which you are enrolled.  If you received your annual Pell Grant limit during the academic year, you will not have additional eligibility during summer term.

9. There are also annual Stafford loan limits! If you borrowed a Stafford loan during the 2007-2008 academic year, you may only borrow the remaining amount of your annual loan limit. The amount will be listed on your award letter.  You must be registered for six or more non-repeated credits to borrow a Stafford loan.

10. Veteran Benefits, WIA, Dislocated Worker, DRS, and Indian Scholarship funds may be available for the summer term. Check with the appropriate agency representative. The Student Services Center must receive notification from your agency regarding your funding before any loan application will be processed.

11. If your award letter is dated prior to June 4, 2008 and you are eligible for grant funding, the grants should be placed on your account by June 4, 2008.  If there are remaining funds after your charges are paid, a check should be mailed to your permanent address within 5 business days.  If your award letter is dated after June 4, 2008, your grant funding should be placed on your account the Tuesday following your award letter date.

12.The expected disbursement date of your loan funds will be printed on the disclosure statement you will receive from your lender once your loan has been processed.
