Pin Numbers

Do I need a PIN number to file a FAFSA?
Having a PIN number eliminates the need to print a signature page and mail it to the Central Processor, therefore saving weeks of processing time. The PIN number acts as your electronic signature. It also allows you to make corrections to your information after you?ve filed your FAFSA. You may sign up for a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov. You may request that a PIN be either e-mailed or mailed to you. You will receive your PIN via e-mail in about three days. It will take up to 10 days for you to receive your PIN in the mail.

I'm not sure if I already have a PIN number. How can I check?
Go to http://www.pin.ed.gov Select "Apply for a PIN." If you already have one, this site will tell you.

What if I lose my PIN number?
Go to www.pin.ed.gov. Select "Request a Duplicate PIN." You may request that a duplicate PIN be either e-mailed or mailed to you. You will receive your PIN via e-mail in about three days. It will take up to 10 days for you to receive your PIN in the mail.

Do I need to apply for a PIN every year?
No, once you have a PIN number, it is yours indefinitely. The same goes for your parents; so, if your parents have other children who will be going to college, they will use the same PIN to sign their FAFSAs.

Should my parents get a PIN number?
Absolutely! Your parents should apply for a PIN. They will then be able to sign the FAFSA electronically and make any necessary changes to the completed FAFSA. They may apply for a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov

My parents don't want to apply for a PIN number. What should I do?
While completing the FAFSA on the web, you will be asked if your parents want to sign the FAFSA with a PIN or if you want to print out a signature page. If your parents do not have a PIN, you can choose to "print out a signature page." Have your parents sign it, and mail it to the address indicated on the form. It will slow the process but satisfy the requirement.

What if my parents and/or I didn't have a PIN when we first completed the FAFSA, but now we have received one? Can we still sign the FAFSA with our PINs?
Yes, you can. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. Click on "Provide Electronic Signature" and follow the instructions.
