Financial Aid Disbursements
Why do we have to wait until after the end of the second week of school to receive our grant funding?
Financial aid disbursements are based on the number of credits you have after the five day drop-add period each term. Once the drop-add period has passed, your financial aid is placed on your LSC student account and is used to pay your current charges. If you have any funding left over, a check is mailed to you at your permanent address.
As the student payment office manually checks each account, the timing between the drop-add period ending and the check being mailed is normally about a week.
My loan disclosure statement from the bank says that my loan is going to be disbursed 30 days into the term. Why the delay?
The government requires that students who do not currently have a student loan wait 30 days into the term before they can receive their first loan disbursement. This is part of an initiative to cut down on loan defaults. Normally those students who default withdraw from college during the first 30 days of the term. By not disbursing funds until 30 days into the term and having students prove they are still attending, our default rates have decreased.
Why can?t I pick up my check rather than having it mailed to me?
Attempting to locate a particular student's check within the numerous checks that are printed each Tuesday is time consuming. Mailing checks has cut down on foot traffic to the student payment office, allowing employees to concentrate on getting checks out to students more quickly.
Why do some students get only one loan disbursement a term while others get two disbursements during the term?
The government requires that each loan is disbursed in two disbursements. If a student is borrowing their loan for the entire academic year, they receive two disbursements; one during fall term and one during spring term.
If instead, the student borrows a loan just for fall term or just for spring term, two disbursements must be made during the term to meet these regulations. Hence, the student lands up getting half the funds at the beginning of the term and the second half nine weeks later.
