LSC Professional Development Committee Minutes
March 15, 2007, 11:00 – 12:00 a.m., Administrative Conference Room

Members Present: Jim Berg, Diane Dyzuk, Tess D’andrea, Theresa Hornstein, Sonda Strom-Larson, Mary Nienaber

Meeting Dates: Sorry for the confusion with the new date. The prior date was on the duty day and then I believe there was a time change issue as well.

Budget:.Current balance = $3612 as of 1/23/07. This will not be sufficient with all potential activities to come. Mary will talk with PC regarding this issue.

CTL Activities: Current activities include as series of brown bag lunch sessions: Marlise Riffle on her global connections, Sue Doering on world communication, Meet the Advisors, “Hogwarts 101” focusing on teaching techniques, Betsy Ingram-Diver on curriculum development, Deanne Roquet on portfolio development. It was suggested that CTL connect with Tom Gustafson to collaborate on some online active learning activities. The CTL website is also coming along.

MnSCU Staff and Leadership Development: Mary continues work on the e-orientation committee. The plan is to roll out the orientation for Fall 07-08. This will cause the committee to re-think our current orientation agenda, as much of the information covered will be online and provided separately.

Employee Recognition: HR staff has been charged with finding appropriate gift items from a vendor.

Update on Activities
Supervisory Training: March topic will be work styles, conflict issues with Mark Winson and the AAO issues will be address in the shared governance meeting April 5th. April 27th MnSCU Professional Development staff, Anita Rios and Jeff Hudson will be coming up to pilot some of their new material.

Spring Software Training Schedule
Software training has gone well with full enrollments. The storm cancelled on Access session and HR is asking participants for evaluative feedback and what level course they would like repeated, if the trainer is available. Two sessions for Hyperion Data Warehouse users for Student Services and Finance modules is scheduled for April 17 & 18. Registration is handled through MnSCU.

NEW - Faculty Credentialing Training:
If the new system is available, Mary is suggesting that part-time temp faculty be offered a session to use the web-based credentialing system with instruction.

Duty Day Activities: - Mary has prepared the agenda and will send college-wide with final input from EC April 12 – College-wide Assessment Activities: Kent provided the following report:
1. Conduct a session of the whole devoted to developing a shared vision of assessment on our campus.
2. Conduct break out sessions devoted to best practices.
3. Offer "Design Your Own" break out sessions.
Other possible content: (a) present and interpret the results from the Constitution Day / Citizenship project last fall, (b) a review of the college wide outcomes rubrics (the last ones were recently completed), and (c) and advanced elumen user's demonstration.

For other departments: the agenda will suggest that departments use the time to meet and work through the Process Review Manual.

April 13 – College-wide activities in preparation for Campus Focus Visit for the morning. All employee lunch and announcements. Afternoon will be a faculty work day geared toward collecting and editing data for the academic database. (Barry Dahl and Gary Kruchowski)

April 27 – Support Staff Appreciation: Anita Rios and Jeff Hudson have agreed to provide a session on “strengthfinder” assessment tool. AFSMCE employees will be asked to complete the assessment online prior to the event and EC has approved the additional budget necessary for the event.

May 21st – It was suggested that, as long as we have the DECC for the day of graduation, could we hold an employee event at the DECC that morning prior to the rehearsal and graduation?

Orientation
Faculty - plan for an evening session. There will be one more staff orientation before the end of the year.

Next Meeting: Thursday, May 17th at 11:00 am - Admin Conference Room: note – we will try to schedule another April meeting!
