International Education Committee
Meeting Minutes: September 2, 2004
2:00 p.m. Members Present: James Berg, Timothy Benson, Hanna Erpestad, Michele Keane, Gary Zaudtke, Boyd Dallos, Jeri Schwerin, Theresa Hornstein, Kathy Tanski
A discussion on allowing PSEO students to participate in travel programs. Jim Berg will research the state policy on allowing minors to travel with the college without direct parental or guardian supervision. The committee supports maintaining the current practice of 18 and older (or minors accompanied by a parent or legal guardian) and allowing for individual PSEO students to petition.
The committee decided to celebrate Global Education Week on the week of September 20 th. Some suggested activities include having an information table set up on different days for various travel programs and offering "brown bag sessions" on said programs (possibly in room 2462). September 20 th the Diversity Committee is presenting salsa dancing at 12:00 and 4:00. On that day the Mexico Learning Community will set-up an information table. Boyd will have a table on the Italy Study Abroad on Wednesday in the commons. Someone should have Adrian do a brown bag presentation on her experiences in England. Gary will take care of information for the China Travel Program.
Currently Lake Superior College is not a member of EGL. Michele Keane recommended that those going to the conference in St. Cloud on September 29 th should discuss it then. The dues are $300. It was decided that we should make a recommendation to Candy Barnack to join EGL.
The International Education Committee does not currently have a budget. We discussed looking at getting ready to put in initiatives to Rick Halvorson. This can include developing further the exchange programs (bringing foreign students to campus). Kathy Tanski mentioned that foreign students are being charged in-state tuition. The committee decided it should meet with Rick Halvorson at a future date to discuss the creation of a budget.
Future Meetings will be held in the Academic Conference room at 1:30 p.m. on October 6, November 3, and December 1. Respectfully submitted, Timothy Benson |
