Developmental Education Committee
Meeting Minutes: November 13, 2002
Present: Beth Adams, Barb Cox, Ann DeArmond, Althea McBurrows, Jerry Niebauer, Kristin Rust, Jeri Schwerin, Nancy Schumacher
Minutes:
- ESL - It was decided that the list obtained from the new student assessment test was not necessarily a true reflection of the actual numbers of ESL students currently taking classes. A suggestion was made to survey faculty to get a more accurate number of students that would benefit from some type of ESL assistance. From there a focus group could be set up with students to get their ideas as to how they could best be helped.
- Transfer of Developmental Education Courses: Concern was expressed over the policy to not accept developmental courses from other campuses. Even though cut scores for developmental courses and course configurations might be different at the various sites, it seems if one college says a student is college ready based on performance at that campus, then we should honor that decision.
- Developmental Science Course: It was noted that students are especially having difficulty transferring skills from developmental courses to the science courses and Health programs. It was suggested that we offer the developmental science course in the spring. Also, the reading department has set up a meeting with instructors from the nursing area to look at developing a reading course to help students prepare for the entrance exam to the nursing program.
- Developmental Education Research: Several suggestions were made as to the questions we will need to ask in order to determine if developmental ed. is being successful. Many factors will need to be considered when looking at student success in college level courses, such as the correlation between GPA and initial placement test score, learning disabilities, grades in developmental courses, and number of credits taken. We will need input from Sue Stenerson to help us develop and refine our questions to be sure we get the information we are seeking as we prepare to request research.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 20, 2002 in the Academic Conference Room.
