Developmental Education Committee

Meeting Minutes: October 30, 2002

Present: John Arola, Becky Bradshaw, Barb Cox, Ann DeArmond, Hanna Erpestad, Dave Israel, Jerry Niebauer, Nancy Schumacher, Gary Zaudtke

Minutes:

  1. Review of Previous Concerns: Issues from last year were discussed and revisited with the concern about ESL needs still a primary issue. The need for some type of service to ESL students was expressed, whether in the form of tutoring or classes. It was noted that UWS no longer offers a program and that perhaps we could also serve students from that campus, as well as increase diversity on our campus, if we offered assistance in this area. John and Ann will pursue finding the number of current ESL students at LSC and determine how many would benefit from an ESL program.
  2. Developmental Education Plan: It was decided that to proceed with developing a plan for Developmental Education, it is necessary to gather data about students taking developmental classes. There are numerous questions that might be addressed, some that the committee mentioned included: What is the success rate of students who have taken developmental classes? Are students not passing but continuing on to college level courses? What percentage of students from the first level of developmental continue on through level two and beyond? This data could help us determine curriculum needs, address scheduling concerns, and assist advisers in the registration process. Ann will request the appropriate forms from the office of Institutional Research to begin this research process.
  3. Registration: Once again the online registration with no blocking system was an issue of concern. It was suggested that it might be very beneficial to have an adviser assigned to the developmental education program. This would give faculty a contact person to address registration concerns to and someone to notify when students fail a course and should not continue on. Scheduling needs were also addressed with the concern that there are no seats available at the beginning of the semester in classes students either score into, find they need to retake, or need to move to due to results of a first day of class pre-test.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 13, 2002 from 1-2.
