Developmental Education Committee
Meeting Minutes: May 9, 2005
Present: Jim Berg, Barb Cox, Ann DeArmond, Hanna Erpestad, Rody Bowers-Hughes, Joni Mathison, Georgia Robillard, Kristin Rust, Nancy Schumacher, Paula Young
- Learning Center News:
- The LC will be open on Friday, May 13th even though there are no classes. All employee and all student e-mails were sent to advertise this.
- Forty seven faculty/staff satisfaction surveys regarding the LC have been completed, but only one idea for workshops was suggested..
- The LC will be open for summer term Monday-Thursday from 9:00-2:00.
- A+dvancer: A handout was provided explaining what A+dvancer is and about the pilot program that is funded through Institutional Effectiveness. It still needs to get marketed to the advisors and some other key people and the "referral" system needs to be clearly identified. Joni and Paula are system administrators.
- Writeplacer: Karen Bush had her Fund. Writing II class take the test. Writing and comp faculty will grade them and compare results with each other and the scoring of the Writeplacer. The tentative date for this is one of the duty days at the end of the semester. The end result will be to determine cut scores and accuracy of the test.
- Developmental Ed Learning Communities: Sue Stenerson facilitated two focus groups the first week of May; one was with students in the Level II learning community and the other focus group was with Level II Reading and Writing students not involved in a learning community. She was trying to find out if the learning community provided the benefits it is believed to offer (friendships; connection to college, classmates, instructors; improved attendance/retention, motivation; more personal attention from faculty) and other interesting facts/opinions. She will provide Paula with the information once it is compiled.
- Online Developmental Courses: Ann (Reading and Study Skills) and Kirsi (Fundamentals of Writing) both taught a level II class online this spring. In addition to the usual online satisfaction survey, Ann and Kirsi devised a few more questions to get at attitudes/facts regarding offering online courses at the developmental level. Ann has "lost" approximately half of her class; however, this could happen with an on-ground class, too.
- MNADE.org: The Minnesota Association of Developmental Education Conference will be October 6th and 7th at Ruttger's Conference Center. Ann and Kirsi are submitting a proposal to present at the conference. Check the website later this summer for specific conference information. Last year the first 50 members (membership is $10.00) to sign up for the conference had their registration fees waived.
- Since Ann has resigned (and we're all very sad and going to miss her immensely) to take a new position at Madison Area Technical College next year, the person who will "oversee"/coordinate developmental education is Paula Young.
Meeting time and date TBD in the fall, although the first Monday of the month at noon has worked quite well...
Respectfully Submitted, Paula Young
