- Learning Communities update - The task force working on developmental education learning communities for the academic year 2004-05 will be called the Student Success team and the communities will be called Student Success Communities. Plans have been made to invite students into these communities based on their assessment results. Paula will be the contact person for students, and specific orientation/registration times will be set up through the advising department.
- Status of Dev. Education Transfer Credit policy - The committee will forward to the policy committee the following suggestion for advising: "it is highly recommended that all students (transfer or LSC) whose developmental education credits are older than two years re-take the assessment test." This is just the recommendation that advisors should give students, not a change in policy. It was also suggested that we would need data to make any policy changes. Ann will bring a research request to the Office of Institutional Research to collect data on students who took college level coursework with developmental education credits older than two years to see if this is a significant factor in success rates. If it is a determinant, then policy can be re-visited.
- Online Developmental Courses - It was reported that all developmental reading, writing, and math have at least one online section being offered both semesters next year. The committee asked about the screening process for developmental students taking online courses. Several issues were brought up, which included: computer skills, disability accommodations, readability of D2L information and a D2L quiz, and whether students could be asked to meet on-campus for the first week. Jeri Ann and Ann will be meeting with Barry to address these concerns and discuss qualifications of instructors.
- Online Math Courses - Kathy reported that math instructors teaching Pre-Algebra feel the current screening worked well in limiting the spring online math courses to students who are highly motivated.
- ESL - The ESL task force continues to meet and plan for providing ESL courses next fall. Damon suggested that a test needed to be identified immediately to place students into these courses. Ann asked about the companion test for ACCUPLACER, and Joni said she would look into it.
- Learning Center - The Learning Center will provide D2L workshops for the first week of classes fall semester. These will be provided especially for developmental students.
- Journal of Developmental Education - The Spring 2004 issue of the Journal of Developmental Education is available in the CTL room on the third floor.
The next meeting will be Monday, April 5, at noon, in the Student Services Conference room.
