Developmental Education Committee
Meeting Minutes: February 2, 2004
Present: John Arola, Rody Bowers-Hughes, Ann DeArmond, Ryan Fralich, Kathy Grosh, Georgia Robillard, Kristin Rust, Jeri Schwerin, Sagel Urlander, Paula Young
- New Members - Several new members have joined the committee this semester. New members include Rody Bowers-Hughes, Georgia Robillard, and Sagel Urlander from Student Services, Damon Kapke from the English department, and Ryan Fralich, student representative.
- Policy Committee Update - The developmental education committee and developmental faculty recommended policy changes dealing with transfer credits and institutional drop in developmental courses that Paula brought to policy committee. The policy committee's recommendation for the transfer credits is to accept transfer credits up to two years. At the meeting of developmental education faculty in January, it was suggested that students who have taken developmental courses elsewhere retest when they enroll at LSC. Since that was the recommendation of faculty in the area, the union did not pass the two-year transfer policy. This will go back to the policy committee and interested faculty should attend the meeting to address the issue. The other recommendation from this committee, to drop students after the first three days of the semester, raised many questions and concerns at policy. This will possibly be brought to shared governance. Ryan agreed to also bring this to Student Senate for student consideration.
- Provocative Propositions - Propositions will be discussed again on the February 13 duty day and presented to IE after that. Paula reported that the ESL proposition is recommending we begin testing students this summer and have two courses offered in the Fall. If both classes do not fill, interested faculty has agreed they could combine the two levels of courses. Sagel shared the Learning Communities proposition, which is part of the retention initiative. This proposition is recommending a pilot program with a case manager and task force to provide oversight to two Developmental Education learning communities for Fall semester.
- Study Skills tutor - Paula is looking for a tutor/mentor for study skills in the Learning Center. This position would be a paid position and she encouraged committee members to help her find the right student for this job.
- Advising reports - We need to update the advising reports from the CPT testing to accurately reflect curriculum and mandatory placement. Ann will contact Joni to make sure the changes have occurred.
- Counseling report - John reported that he is seeing many students with many personal, as well as academic issues. He also has been working on missing in action students, and continues to work on the faculty/student mentor program. It has been a been a big help to developmental faculty to have a counselor available to meet the needs of our students.
- Research - Our research request from last year has not been completed. Ann will follow up with the Office of Institutional Research. The committee decided to meet on the first Monday of each month this semester.
Our next meeting will be on Monday, March 1, from noon to one.
